Getting cyber insurance? What Australian insurers now expect

Cyber insurance is becoming a must-have for Australian businesses — but the fine print has changed. More and more insurers now require specific security controls before they’ll cover you, and a claim can be reduced or denied if those controls weren’t in place.

The controls they commonly ask for

  • Multi-factor authentication on email and remote access
  • Regular, tested backups you can actually restore from
  • Managed endpoint protection on devices
  • Staff awareness and phishing training

This is essentially the Essential Eight — the Australian Government’s baseline for cyber resilience. The good news is that much of it can be achieved with tools you may already be paying for. The hard part is configuring everything correctly and being able to prove it at claim time.

If your renewal is coming up and you’re not certain you’d meet the requirements, it’s worth checking before the insurer does. We can review where you stand and close the gaps.
